Vogue : How to choose the best hair accessories for your wedding celebrations
Your wedding day is the day to play it safe with your sartorial choices. But you can and should add an element of surprise to your look, just to give it a special touch. While every overarching bridal repertoire is likely to centre on that dream lehenga with jewellery to match, we are shining the spotlight on the adornments that decorate your mane. Hair accessories are not just perfect to tie up your tresses, but they have also come out of their costume avatar. Some of the top bridal jewellers in the country have also approved the trend, and now craft hair accessories using precious metals and gemstones. To get more insight on the best hair accessories for the modern-day bride, we spoke to Rohan Narang, managing director of Hazoorilal Legacy. Excerpts below.
What are the different hair accessories a bride can opt for?
Among the wide roster of bridal hair accessories, a passa, matha patti, maang tikka, bodla, hair brooch and tiara are the usual suspects for an Indian wedding. Diamond barrettes and semi-precious stone or pearl encrusted headbands have also made a comeback in a big way. We’ve also had requests for a Punjabi paranda in gold and a jade bangara, as well as jada billalu for South Indian brides.
What kind of hair accessories work best for different wedding occasions?
Diamond encrusted hair clips and brooches look beautiful underneath a veil. Delicately embellished tiaras with elaborate gowns also make an ideal choice for an engagement or a reception. The vintage appeal of passas, maang tikkas and matha pattis goes well with traditional bridal ensembles too.
For a mehandi, brides can opt for lighter neckpieces and stud earrings. I suggest pairing them with an oversized maang tikka or a passa. Alternately, a traditional matha patti can look great with a pair of statement earrings. Delicate diamond tiaras can be teamed with solitaire diamond studs and a string of solitaire diamonds around the neck.
Which celebrity-approved trend is popular right now?
With a slew of celebrity weddings last year, there was no dearth of inspiration with regards to the traditional bridal looks. Elaborate matha pattis in polki, pearls and semi-precious stones was a trend that took off in a big way and is still prevalent.
What are your top tips for selecting bridal jewellery?
Try picking the outfit first. The colour you choose determines whether the jewellery should be in gold, diamond or polki, as well as the style (choker, guluband or a rani haar) [you should pick], depending on the design of the dress. Don’t be afraid to go a little OTT and opt for oversized statement pieces like large maang tikkas, matha pattis or cocktail rings; the bigger the better. You can easily customise them later and use them as versatile separates. Lastly, although social media works great as a reference point, don’t be too influenced by it. Follow your instincts and personal style.
